During an April 4th appearance on Homer’s “Coffee Table” radio show on KBBI AM 890, Senator Lisa Murkowski took to the airwaves to reaffirm her support for abortion “rights,” and to pledge continued support for federal funding of Planned Parenthood. She was quoted in the Homer News, “The right to a safe and legal abortion has been affirmed by the courts, and I stand by that. I will continue to support funding for Planned Parenthood,” she said.
Murkowski also accused Republicans of an “attack on women,” when asked about the recent Blunt Amendment intended to protect religious institution’s right to decline payment for contraceptives in their employer-sponsored healthcare plans. Ironic, given her vote in favor of the amendment which she now says she regrets.
Murkowski’s continued support for abortion “rights” is not surprising given her legislative history. She was a strong advocate for abortion as a State representative while serving in the Alaska State House, and has been designated as a champion of a “woman’s right to choose” by “The Wish List,” an organization dedicated to the recruitment and election of “pro-choice Republicans.”
Since being appointed to the United States Senate by her father in 2002, she has repeatedly supported abortion “rights,” voting in 2003 to affirm the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, averring that it was “appropriate and secures an important constitutional right . . . and such decision should not be overturned.”
Murkowski has also repeatedly stood in opposition to President Reagan’s “Mexico City Policy,” instituted to bar federal funding for foreign non-governmental organizations that perform or promote abortion. She voted on at least three occasions in failed attempts overturn the policy, and finally in 2009 to help the Democrat-controlled Congress and the newly-elected President Barack Obama to finally kick the “Mexico City Policy” to the curb.
More recently in 2011 she emerged as a leader in the fight to keep federal dollars flowing to one of the nation’s largest abortion providers, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc.
