“I know of no way to judge the future but by the past.”
March 23, 1775
St. John’s Anglican Church, Richmond, Virginia
The speech is one of the best known in the world, but only for its dramatic conclusion… But Patrick Henry called for far more than life and liberty that day.
With his body hunched over like a galley slave overburdened by the bondage of his chains, his body shivering at the penalties of treason…
His eyes looking up at those advocating submission to the Crown, his hands crossed as if held by the iron shackles of despotic rulers…
Patrick Henry continued his assault on pacifists and loyalists that would soon be the singular call to life and liberty then just as it still is today, “I know not what course others may take, but as for me… Give me liberty! Or give me death.”
“I know not what course others may take, but as for me… Give me liberty! Or give me death.”
No other speech or action was more inspiring of our nation’s forefathers’ rebellion against the British Empire and the beginning of eight years of war, without which we would still be subjects of a king in a faraway land.
But there was far more to Patrick Henry’s speech that day, as he called for war against Great Britain.
There was that “insidious smile with which our petition has been lately received,” by the King of England. And insidious it was, as the king in one moment smiled at the humble request sent by the Colonies, as preparations for war against those colonies was prepared.
There was the naval armada and armies amassing at Williamsburg, the king’s refusal to pardon repentant rebels, and the ominous threat if captured of hanging by the neck and “while you are sill living your bodies are to be taken down, your bowels torn out… your head then cut off, and your bodies divided each into four quarters…”
But before calling for war over “…peace… at the price of chains and slavery,” Patrick Henry laid the foundation for his call to war, and all that would follow:
“I know of no way to judge the future but by the past. And judging by the past, I wish to know what here has been in the conduct of the British ministry for the past ten years to justify the hopes with which these gentlemen have been pleased to solace themselves and the House? Is it that insidious smile with which our petition has been lately received? Trust it not, sir… Suffer not yourselves to be betrayed with a kiss. Ask yourselves how this gracious reception of our petition comports with those warlike preparations which cover our waters and darken our land. Are fleets and armies necessary to a work of love and reconciliation? … Let us not, I beseech you, sir, deceive ourselves longer…”
“…Let us not, I beseech you, sir, deceive ourselves longer…”
So let’s not deceive ourselves any longer.
It’s time for new candidates to seek election, and for many State Senators and all of the State House to seek their re-elections.
Before we’re betrayed by a kiss…
Before we look into another insidious smile…
Before we start looking for something in the campaign promises to justify the hope with which so many seem to be satisfied with… let’s judge the future by the past, focusing intently on the only record that matters: bills sponsored and votes cast.
THE RECORD THAT MATTERS
BILLS SPONSORED AND VOTES CAST
To judge anything other than the votes cast and bills sponsored in the last 18 months is to be beguiled by an insidious smile…
To ignore the bills sponsored and votes cast is to be betrayed by the kiss of promises made on the campaign trail, but rarely realized in the Alaskan Legislature.
