Merrick Opposes Life

Representative Kelly Merrick opposed a vote on January 29, 2020 to move the Life At Conception Act, HB 178, to a different committee for the simple purpose of getting a hearing, allowing debate, and a committee vote.

Despite her vote opposing life, Representative Merrick wants you to believe that she values “the sanctity of life to the very core of my being,” in large part because her mother chose life for her, making her a “survivor of abortion.”

In an article Representative Merrick submitted to Must Read Alaska, Representative Kelly Merrick sought to improve her pro-life credibility by claiming to be a “survivor of abortion,” even though her mother, “chose to give me life.”

Let’s be clear:  babies don’t survive abortion because their mothers chose life for them.

“Survivors of abortion” are survivors because their mothers DID NOT choose life for them.

Claire Culwell’s mother chose abortion – but the abortion procedure only killed Claire’s sister

Josiah Presley’s mother chose abortion, and the abortion procedure leaving his left arm deformed.

Melissa Ohden’s mother chose a saline abortion to kill her in 1977 failed when she was 31 weeks old.

Representative Kelly Merrick’s mother chose LIFE.

Representative Kelly Merrick is now paying if forward by opposing the Life At Conception Act transfer so it can be debated for the first time (let alone pass the House).

Gianna Jessen is another “survivor of abortion,” and her birth certificate reads, “born during Saline abortion.”

The chasm separating “my mom chose life” and “born during Saline abortion” is about as wide as one can imagine.

And the chasm separating “pro-life to the very core of my being” and opposing debate on the Life At Conception Act is about as wide as one can imagine.

In another attempt to draw us away from the real issue, Representative Merrick continues in the article that features her testimony in a House Finance Committee meeting where she shares her support for an amendment blocking abortion funding in the 2020 budget.

Unfortunately, Representative Merrick’s commitment to protecting life means that she’s lost track of the budget amendment, doesn’t know if it became part of the 2020 budget, and now tells Alaska Right to Life members that the amendment was actually invalid “due to federal law and policy.”

Finally, Representative Merrick assures Alaska Right To Life members that she is “working to minimize abortions in Alaska.”

In fact, Representative Merrick would have us all believe that she is our “true pro-life advocate.”  However, the record shows differently, since she refused to co-sponsor the  Life At Conception Act on March 5, 2019.

If claiming to survive an abortion that never happened, boasting of support for a budget amendment she can’t tell us is law or not, undermining that same amendment, and then opposing a move that would allow the Life at Conception Act to get a hearing is “working to minimize abortions in Alaska,” then we have one simple request:
